WAITROSE have erected new signs to improve the safety of a crossing at the entrance to the car park after a shopper was nearly hit by a car.

Professor Warwick Fox, from Uplands, Stroud, called for the safety of the crossing at the Stroud store to be improved after he was involved in the near miss with a BMW Sedan earlier this summer.

The emeritus professor of philosophy at University of Central Lancashire feared that somebody could be killed or seriously injured unless action was taken.

A spokesman for Waitrose said: "Safety is of paramount importance and we are grateful to Professor Fox for his support.

"The signs will make drivers more aware of pedestrians crossing and encourage them to take greater care as they enter our car park from the roundabout."

Professor Fox welcomed the news and said the signs will make the crossing safer for all shoppers.

He said: "I am delighted to hear that Waitrose has undertaken to improve the visibility of this awkwardly situated crossing.

"This should make the situation safer for all concerned.”
