PEOPLE of all ages came along to enjoy a day of fishing by the canal in Stonehouse.

Angler Darren Attwood organised the open day on Sunday, August 21, after work was recently completed to encourage more fishing on the Stroudwater canal which runs alongside the A419 Bristol Road in Bridgend.

He organised the day with the Association Phoenix Angling Club, one of the oldest fishing clubs in the area.

“The day was a great success with non anglers coming along throughout the day some even went home and came back for another go,” said Darren, who lives in King’s Stanley.

“Some came along with their starter kits looking for advice on how to get set up correctly and all managed to catch a fish so all in all it was a fantastic day.”

Mr Attwood organised the event after he noticed how quickly the canal had come back to life after work was completed, but said there were hardly any anglers.

He is hoping that the event will now be held annually.

“I couldn’t help wonder why so few anglers could be seen taking advantage of an amazing water we have on our doorstep,” he said.

“I decided to make contact with the Angling club and arrange a day I could hold an open day to invite anyone interested to come down and introduce them to the venue along with some advice and how not to damage the wildlife.”

Anyone interested in fishing on the canal can obtain a Phoenix license from Lobby’s Tackle in Stonehouse and will also require an Environment Agency Rod License from the post office.
