SINCE the summer the village of Amberley has had no village shop, however, all that is about to change.

A groundswell of support from local businesses and the community, has led to plans for a new shop and post office by spring 2018.

Amberley Shop on the common will be based in the former pool room of The Black Horse pub, thanks to a generous offer from landlord Paul Sugden.

Almost £26,000 has already been pledged by villagers to purchase shares in the Community Benefit Society, but more funds are needed to meet the £37,000 target to help transform the premises.

Neil Truphet has spearheaded the campaign to open the shop because he didn’t want to have to drive to his nearest store.

“We are fortunate to live in a beautiful, vibrant village,” said Neil.

“But it’s frustrating to have to jump in the car just to get a pint of milk.

“We have seen the positive effect of a shop in other villages and our vision is to replicate their success in building a community hub for young and old.

“With the reduction in local post offices, we aim to fill the gap with a selection of goods and services that will appeal to locals, walkers on the common and tourists.”

A recent survey of residents found that 85% of respondents feel a shop in Amberley is very important, with over 50 households offering to volunteer time and services.

The team is particularly keen to hear from anyone who would like to join the executive team of the proposed Community Benefit Society.
