The British story of high-rise housing in light of the Grenfell disaster is on the agenda of Stroud Civic Society’s annual general meeting this week.
Tim Mars will unravel how multi-storey point and slab blocks were built in such large numbers across the UK after the second world war at Stroud Old Town Hall on Thursday, April 26 from 8pm.
He’ll also explain why high-rises were once seen as the long-term solution to the housing crisis, before examining four fatal tower block fires since 1991 that he thinks could have the rung the alarm bells that might have averted the catastrophe of Grenfell.
The talk takes place after the 7.30pm AGM of Stroud Civic Society, which aims at the preservation and protection of Stroud’s building heritage.
Admission for the meeting and talk is £2 for members and £4 for non-members.
