THE WOMEN'S Institute of Stonehouse are celebrating their 50th anniversary.

To mark the occasion Stonehouse WI were joined by Hardwicke's branch of the organisation and an excellent speaker was booked.

Jai Carr of the WI said: "We've had links with them for many years, ever since they joined us in our visit to the BBC studios in Bristol, so it seemed natural to have them with us to mark our special occasion.

"Everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion very well, the room was decorated with bunting and balloons, all this with a smattering of laughter thrown in for good measure."

What made the anniversary particularly special was the progress women have made in the last 50 years.

"There have been such a lot of changes since our WI formed in April 1968, especially for women as our lives are extremely busy in this day and age.

"This is something which can be detrimental to community groups such our WI, so we are very proud to still have a healthy membership 50 years on," added Jai.

The group are happy to get behind any community projects that need a bit of support, they also aim to broaden their minds with varied monthly speakers.

Every month Stonehouse WI meet at 7.30pm, except August in the Community Centre on Laburnum Walk.

Ladies are very welcome to join in at any WI sessions and the first meeting is free of charge.
