Around town with Sheila Maddock
4:51pm Thursday 8th May 2008
The Stroudwater Textile Festival continues until May 21 with stunning exhibitions in Stroud Subscription Rooms, Stroud Museum, The Space and Kendrick Street Gallery. Talks and workshops have been well attended and attracted many visitors to the town. In Stroud Museum, families are invited to drop in on Saturday May 17 and help create a crazy quilt, and on Sunday May 18 at 2pm, Deidre McSharry talks about Eastern costume. Shop windows hold clues to a textile competition, as well as colourful textile displays and poems. More poems are pasted up around town, and it is good to see many town centre shops are sprucing up their paintwork. And it doesn't all end this month. In October there is another mini-festival to launch a book of poems by Jane Weir, inspired by the work of Barron and Larcher, with an exhibition of new textiles by Linda Brassington, talks, workshops and trips to places connected with the two 'modern misses' who lived in Painswick in the 1930s.

Christian comment
11:47am Thursday 8th May 2008
JUST over a week ago, early on a Sunday morning, a group of young people from our local churches met to pray on the forecourt of the Subscription Rooms. They were quietly preparing for a day of action in the community, a day when they would tend the gardens of the elderly, pick up litter, paint over graffiti and wash cars; when all of a sudden in the midst of their meditations a car of considerable value pulled up at the kerbside.
