MADAM - I am disappointed to see letters opposed to 20mph speed limits.
By changing the speed limit we begin to tackle the culture of driving that currently kills and injures people and reduces quality of life for all. Fear of traffic, noise pollution and the stress of fast-moving roads are worth tackling.
The evidence in favour is overwhelming.
If you are struck by a passing car at 35mph there is a 50 per cent chance you will be killed, and most people hit at this speed suffer serious injury, often life-changing.
At 20mph the pedestrian survival rate is 97 per cent, with most surviving uninjured.
Mr Blackmore (March 12) may think that 30mph is a justified speed but the evidence says otherwise.
It is worth trying to reduce injuries and road death, and improve our towns and villages, by reducing speed.
Is there anywhere we really need to get so quickly that it’s worth killing someone for?
