ON the £8 million redevelopment planned for the Cornhill in Stroud which includes plans to turn the Market Tavern into a supermarket.
Posted by kjag23: Sounds like an M&S. As stated, Waitrose is literally a five minutes walk away. I’d love for it to be another friendly pub - bring back the Pelican days but without all that fighting.
Posted by Nimue Brown: I recall there used to be a little theatre space on the back of that pub - we need community spaces and venues for a lively town centre. We really don’t need yet another supermarket. Extending the space for the farmers’ market is not without charm but if this is the price tag... it’s not worth our paying it. Supermarkets do not make for vibrant town centres or a strong local economy. Independent shops do.

On the changes at the Post Office in Russell Street, Stroud.
Posted by Mad in Stroud: They need to cut costs, because their pricing policy is driving most users elsewhere. A few years ago I was taking nearly all my small and medium size parcels to the post office but since they introduced ‘large letter, ‘small parcel’ and ‘medium parcel’ criteria, instead of a simple weight-oriented pricing structure, most of my business goes to MyHermes or to UPS via Interparcel.com both of which will collect from me for a much more attractive price than Royal Mail or Parcelforce and I don’t have to stand in line in a drab mausoleum. They need to sort their business model out, and get ‘lean’ and ‘mean’ like their competitors. The Royal Mail has a spare tyre around its managerial midriff. Clearly there is a lot of slack in the postal pricing that the Royal Mail has been creaming for years.
Sadly, unless the RM addresses its competitive and corporate issues, the queues at the PO will be drab and cheerless but please let them at least be staffed by sentient beings.
