MADAM – I did enjoy Mr Lee Prescott’s letter, in your esteemed publication on July 23.
It portrayed how much better life was in the ‘good old days’.
Mr Prescott did not indicate the year he was describing.
As his father was being paid pre-decimal currency, it was before 1971.
This was the year I started work, as an apprentice to Daniels of Stroud.
My wage at that time was £5 per week.
Two things in Mr Prescott’s letter are worthy of note.
Firstly, the cost of a bottle of iodine – 1/8 of a weeks pay.
In relative terms that bottle would cost more than £30 today.
No wonder people don’t buy it.
Secondly, Mr Prescott asks, how did we ever survive?
We didn’t is the answer, life expectancy was then about 70, it is now nearly 100.
