MADAM – 100 years ago this week

Our menfolk went to war

They fought against the enemy

on reaching the French shore

We owe so much to those great men

Fathers, brothers, sons

Alas by the end, many were lost

Leaving many widowed mums

Nineteen fourteen the First World War

so few now still alive

for years we’ve heard so many tales

from the brave who did survive

They went to war as boy

and some came back as men

Out of every hundred

survivors averaged ten

We can’t even imagine

the hell that they went through

tales told were not exaggerated

every word rung true

Their ghosts will walk the cemeteries

sharing time amongst their friends

colleagues who fell together

and together their life did end

We have so much to thank them for

each and every one

God bless you all and rest in peace

through your sacrifice we won

A candle lit in honour

It’s not too much to do

for those who gave their lives

for us all, families, me and you....
