ON the decision by secretary of state for communities and local government Eric Pickles to delay a decision on the Javelin Park incinerator application until November 30. A decision was due on Wednesday.

Posted by tomttom: Well done to reporter Chris Warne for being right at the front of this story again.

The given reason for the delay is quite tightly defined - but it boils down to new information from Glosvain (well done Sue et al) indicating the need has been undermined by a new facility planned by Cory.

The incinerator has a 30 year plus life and what the Cory AD facility shows is that there will be many alternative and better treatments for waste that will emerge.

We mustn’t lock ourselves into the costly and damaging incinerator.

I wonder whether Stroud District Council will also share its thoughts about better ways to treat waste?

On the new grammar school entrance test introduced in the county which is aimed at being fairer to pupils who don’t get private tutoring.

Posted by kjag23: What’s wrong with tutoring? The ethos of these schools and SHS in particular is to achieve the very highest no matter what. It values academic achievement above anything else, so surely tutoring to obtain this fits in exactly with the next five years of pushing for the children. Might as well start the bombardment early.

Posted by BigBoy22: What’s wrong with tutoring is that only those who can afford it get to have it. This only adds to the unfairness of our society. If you want an advantage then pay for a private school but don’t stop talented children from underprivileged backgrounds from missing out on a good education at state-funded schools.

Posted by kjag23: This PR move can only last a year for as soon as the paper is released tutors will snatch it up and begin preparing for next year.
