MADAM - I have been reading the tragic news of a local man killed at a local level crossing, my sympathies to the family.
However, I was shocked to read the comments of the authorities “they did every thing right but made the fatal error of not telephoning the signal box”.
This set alarm bells ringing as how can a deaf man like myself and other deaf and hard of hearing persons contact the signal box by telephone?
That means we are not getting equal services and our safety is at risk if we use a level crossing.
Surely in this day and age flashing lights could be installed at level crossings controlled by the signal box to warn that a train is due to come, not only would that help the deaf community but the hearing community too and there would be no need to telephone.
I sometimes use a level crossing near my home but will now have second thoughts.
