MADAM – The 20 miles per hour speed limit in Stroud town centre is a positive move to reduce pedestrian casualties and improve road safety.
However, having witnessed two mature (non-helmeted) adult cyclists in the past 24 hours riding down Gloucester Street against oncoming one-way traffic, it seems that in spite of new speed restrictions, a serious road collision is imminent.
The value of cycling as a natural and environmentally-friendly mode of transport is undeniable, but in discharging their duty as zero-carbon, responsible citizens, cyclists cannot be allowed to flout the Highway Code in such a way that other road users are put at risk.
Whether it is pavement riding, unilluminated night riders or daredevils who sail into the paths of oncoming traffic in one-way streets, is it not time for the police to stress that all of us using Stroud’s roads have a responsibility to do so safely?
