MADAM - I am writing to voice my opinion on the proposal for the destruction of Union Street to enable a developer to make vast amounts of money putting in a town supermarket that most Stroud people do not want. This is utter madness. The Iceland store one of the most popular food stores in the area. The Union Inn is an historic building which should not be pulled down for any reason (now Market Tavern) Corn Hill Market is a desirable space for market stalls and ideal for musical events in town, purpose built and much appreciated. Why are the authorities allowing these plans to be considered?

It seems as nonsensical as signing a clause that if the incinerator is not built a big sum of money will be paid in compensation. What is going on? Who are these developers whose eyes have fallen on our little town? We do not want this area torn down and reinvented. Let us stand together to defeat the proposals. It is called democracy and I for one, will not stand by and let this happen. Our farmers’ market is popular because it is well run and has a handsome site built for it. Don’t let the ‘on setters’ destroy the beauty and richness of our country town.

I intend to get up a petition to protect Stroud from the latest outrage.

I hope many will sign to protect Stroud, which I love as it is. How many agree with me? Let us see.
