MADAM – I write to strongly oppose any suggestion of re-siting the Holloway Monument on the Subscription Rooms Forecourt or to any other location in the town.

I question whether George Holloway deserved a monument at all but his Conservative political supporters determined that the town should have it and paid for it to be erected outside of then New Conservative Club.

In all the dewey-eyed romanticism about him it is easy to forget he was a virulent opponent of co-operative societies, ironic as he set up a mutual organisation to recycle members’ money into his friends’ building projects.

Can I nominate an alternative? Kate Russell – or Lady Amberley daughter in law of Lord John Russell and mother of Bertrand Russell, was a strong advocate of women’s right to vote.

Her recognition would go some way to giving gender balance.
