MADAM – Via this newspaper, please can anyone help me with stories, details, photographs etc of the hostel that was in Crescent Road, Bridgend, Stonehouse during the 1940s and 1950s.

Built originally in 1942 for workers who were working for the war effort at Hoffman’s & Sperry Gyroscope.

It was demolished in the early 1960s and bungalows were built on the land.

It was used for World War Two displaced people Polish, Estonians etc.

I would like hear from any person who has memories etc of that period in particular anyone who knew Jan Ludvik Masny who lived there up until died in 1950.

Then in the 1950s it was used for people who had to leave Egypt in the Suez uprising.

It was at that time I was asked to go and meet the young people there to help them come to terms with living in England.

During that time I made friends with Eddie Calente and his mum and dad, Eddie Stock, Robbie Bonello and Wilma were just a few of the names I remember.

Maybe there are others who lived or worked there who can help me with the history of the Bridgend Hostel.

The late Les Pugh had done some research on the subject but I think more is needed as the hostel played a big part in the history of Stonehouse during its existence.
