MADAM - I do not usually write letters to the press, I rely on the press to report on my duties throughout the district on the input I contribute to my ward, the town and the community as a whole.

However, as the proposer of creating a sculpture trail within the town, that including moving the statue of George Holloway, I must comment on Mr Townley’s letter about that.

The facts are:

Eight sites in all were identified with interest shown from many artists with a local interest.

There was no bias whatsoever in the format of the statues, or who they would represent; the offer is open to anyone and everyone, without bias.

The cost of such was to be self-financing.

George Holloway was recognised as an existing statue that could be incorporated into the plan.

The merit was on the statue, but recognising the description of his achievements as the close by plaque describes, sponsored by district and town councils and other well recognised bodies.

I find Mr Townley’s letter offensive and discrediting, it is full of his opinion that is of a political view that is outdated and spiteful, it is typical of that of one who has enjoyed a privileged life.

Some of us have never had such an opinion or have moved on from that, showing respect to all fellow politicians past and present whatever their politics.

To date I have indicated that I do not intend to seek re-election this May, following this I am now in the process of reconsidering seeking to be re-elected.
