MADAM - Despite the unanimous rejection of the mass burn incinerator by Gloucestershire County Council’s planning committee following a very impressive body of evidence from those opposing the scheme, Eric Pickles has upheld the appeal by Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) to build the thing.
UBB stand to do handsomely from taxpayers. If we can’t produce enough waste to feed the incinerator in Gloucestershire, we’ll transport waste in from outside the county and if we can’t truck in enough waste, we’ll be fined (as has happened with the mass burn incinerator in Coventry).
This is a crazy decision which is opposed by the people of Gloucestershire, town and district councils and is only supported by a minority, Conservative administration in Gloucestershire County Council.
Time to stand up and be counted – I was among those demonstrating against the incinerator in Stroud on Saturday, January 17.
