MADAM – I never thought I would feel the need to defend a statue but Chas Townley’s letter (SNJ 14/01/15) has prompted this action regarding the one dedicated to George Holloway.
Having passed this monument over the last 70 years without giving it too much thought other than that he was a local mill owner, his letter prompted me to dig a little into the past history regarding Mr Holloway.
I do recall in the days before the NHS the older generation singing the praises of the Holloway Benefit Society and the Building Society’s favourable terms, aspects of life that were lost on me as I was too busy playing games and avoiding a caning at school for sloppy work.
However, having delved a little into the past life of good old George, I found no evidence of a virulent opponent of co-operative societies.
It would appear he was both a compassionate and generous man giving generously to Stroud, the hospital, School of Art, library and church.
Not bad for a19th Century monster, keeping in mind he was a man of his generation.
If Chas Townley and “Citizen Smith” wish to raise the funds to erect a monument to whatever idol is the flavour of the month, then I see no problem, it will just become another parking lot for pigeons.
