MADAM – Motorist Brian Marks reporting in SNJ of the difficulties he has getting up Stroud’s hills where speed limits are set at 20mph is another indication, if one were needed of the lunacy of the 20mph zones infecting our district like some dreadful scourge.

The jobsworth architects of the scheme, for want of something better to occupy their time delight in justifying the madness by telling us it prevents accidents, fully aware that that there is not a crumb of proof in the assertion.

Furthermore they know we can’t prove either (they still wriggle and squirm offering the same justification for the insane barrier across the road at Minchinhampton which is nothing more than a traffic hazard).

It must be obvious to the dimmest of wits that constantly checking your speed for fear of exceeding the limit (and a hefty fine) means taking one’s eyes off the road where doing so for a second or two could be dangerous.

Isn’t it significant that since the introduction of this silly limit there have been an upsurge of surveillance cameras around the area (some secreted in unmarked cars) and an increase of fines for modestly exceeding this new limit.

By no stretch of the imagination could this sinister manifestation be deemed a coincidence.

Driving through Painswick must be top of the list for motorists’ worst nightmare where in just a few hundred yards one is accosted with no fewer than seven different speed limits.
