MADAM – Another glorious mess our Conservative-led county council has got us the taxpayers of Gloucestershire into.

First of all, the road maintenance contract, with millions of pounds being paid out and no road repairs.

The next scenario is the incinerator contract that was signed up by the Conservative administration with Urbaser Balfour Beatty even before it went to any planning committee.

It must be stated with all of the bally hoo by all of the other political parties, the Lib Dems were the first party to object even to the signing.

The first stage of the planning application was to Hardwicke Parish Council, the second one Stroud District Council, and the third one Gloucestershire County Council – all of these planning committees turned the application down, but alas, the Conservative Party overruled these committees and the general public at large.

The call now is for the contract to be cancelled.

If the contract is cancelled, there are far cheaper schemes that can be used to dispose of our waste and far more cheaply to run.

This decision is in the hands of the general public, as local and general election are upon us.

And as a final insult to the Gloucestershire public was that Eric Pickles, the Conservative secretary of state, did not even know about the incinerator and left the decision to a junior minister.

Time for a review of the council’s procedures.
