MADAM – Since Stroud is a marginal constituency, many of your readers will be struggling with the dilemma of who to vote for.

Fortunately, Neil Carmichael’s behaviour on the incinerator is making the task easier.

He knows full well that there are at least five major reasons why the incinerator should be abandoned and yet he is only willing to discuss one.

In his own words in the SNJ: “For me, this was not about the technology but the visual impact and massing is, I believe, inappropriate for this site.”

Wonderful – in one sentence he neatly sidesteps four crucial issues: 1. Accountability – the vast majority of people who have studied the incinerator issue are against it , public opinion is against it, and the planning committee voting against it unanimously.

2. Localism – Eric Pickles’ ruthless betrayal of his own Gloucestershire county councillors is a perfect illustration of the duplicity of this Tory government.

They talk the talk (more power to local people, no NHS reorganisation, reform of the banks) yet the vast majority of their policies support big business and disempower the rest of us.

3. Climate change – how can we possibly justify building yet another incinerator, which is effectively a power station, producing masses of CO2?

4. Technological obsolescence – we know that it is perfectly feasible to replace the obsolete incinerator model with alternative cutting-edge technology that does not involve burning.

Spending £500million on technology of this type when other budgets are being cut to the bone is a criminal waste of public money.

The posh boys are totally out of touch with the rest of us.

They think that they can buy the election by using their £78million war chest (mostly donated by their self-interested wealthy donors) to manipulate their way back to power. It’s time to teach them a lesson.

David Drew is an honest, hardworking, honourable politician who worked his socks off when he was our MP between 1997 and 2010.

We all know that if he had been re-elected in 2010 he would have moved mountains to get this monstrous incinerator banned.

Only a vote for David Drew can rid us of Neil Carmichael and the disastrous government he slavishly supports.
