ON Stroud District Council’s decision to approve an application for a supermarket on Dudbridge Industrial Estate in Stroud. Applications for an Asda at Daniels Industrial Estate in Bath Road and an unnamed store at Ryeford were rejected.

Posted by B wildered: A little surprised that Asda didn’t get the go ahead but I expect that they will appeal. It was easily the best site and ‘ticked all the right boxes’ planning wise. Very pleased that we might be getting a Lidl, about time. We shop in Lidl at least once a month. I know we won’t be the only ones pleased either, judging by the amount of people we know who we bump into in Gloucester or Cirencester.

Posted by ojsmith: Watching all the debate, I’m not surprised Asda was thrown out. The transportation assessment was appallingly lacking, and Gloucestershire Highways should be ashamed of their part in agreeing it. Many reasons were given for the refusal at Daniels, I hope (but don’t expect) that Asda now stop wasting time and money and withdraw the appeal.

Posted by TigerTigerBurningBright: “Ticking the right boxes planning wise” is hardly a good reason for a new supermarket. It basically means that Asda and its consultants hunted round for a piece of land, then planned something that ticked the boxes. Boxes that are heavily weighted towards developers and not to communities.

They aren’t interested in the communities they devastate, they aren’t interested in the jobs they destroy to “create” their own.

Posted by GuttedArcades: I’m very glad that Asda was turned down, and pleased for Matthew Large and the employees of Stroud Metals that the Avocet Industrial Estate at Dudbridge was given the go-ahead. Along with (I suspect) many others, I would also welcome an Aldi or a Lidl.

But this is very far from the end of the story. This was a flawed decision that WILL be challenged.
