REGARDING: The “Discount foodstore looks to open shop” in the April 15 edition of the SNJ.
Stroud already has three of the big four supermarkets, namely Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, and there is little to be gained by allowing a fourth (Asda or Morrisons) to open in Stroud.
What would benefit the people of Stroud and surrounding villages would be if Lidl or Aldi were granted permission to open.
This would provide a store which specialises in low-priced but good-quality products, which would automatically then keep the major stores on their toes as regards prices.
I am thinking in particular of those residents of low income in the area.
SDC should follow Cirencester’s lead, in that they have only allowed two majors to open there, and now have both Lidl and Aldi to maintain the balance.
