I RECENTLY attended the celebrations at the Stratford Park Leisure centre where many residents joined together to celebrate its 40th year of opening and serving the greater local community.

It opened in 1975 at a cost of £800,000 and on time!

The cost today to build it would possiblye exceed £8meight million pounds.

More than 22 million customers have passed through the doors over these years and I am proud to say I was one of them as I regularly played squash for more thanover 25 years.

Stratford Park has been a part of many lives both young and old, giving motivation and pleasure to all those wishing to keep fit and play a chosen sport.

It was my pleasure to meet the BBC Countryfile presenter Ellie Harrison, who was equally charming and sincere young mum who opened the ceremony and as Ellie stated she is still a regular user of these facilities.

Congratulations to all concerned and thank God some people had the vision and courage all those years ago to build such a project, as it has been a great asset in people’s lives today.
