ON the High Court’s decision on Friday to defer Stroud District Council’s appeal against plans for the £500 million Javelin Park incinerator.

Posted by James Makepeace: Does anybody actually care about the dreadful thing which is about to be done to our countryside, our roads, our house values and even the air we breathe ? Do our children and grandchildren get no choice about how much toxic material they will inhale during their young lives? The people of Gloucestershire are appalled at what is being done in the name of public service. We can only hope that the judge has good reason to delay a decision Posted by tomttom: Another way to stop the ghastly incinerator would be for a community benefit alternative to be built first. The contract for the incinerator, and its funding, would fall apart.

There is such a project - the Stroud R4C (resource recovery, recycling and refining centre) - we will all hear more of this in the coming weeks. Public meeting July 7 if you want to learn more.

Posted by James Makepeace: The Stroud R4C project sounds interesting... so long as it’s not just a harebrained scheme dreamed up by people with no experience of such things. How fast can it be brought into service and does Stroud District Council take it seriously as a waste management solution ?

Does it have a proper business plan ? I sincerely hope so and I am certain there is more than enough talent among the large community of local residents to help with the professional details if there are any shortfalls.

Posted by standishgreen: Several technically viable alternatives, including the R4C proposal, offer a better environmental solution. Particularly, but not solely, visual. The Danes now admit they took a wrong turn with their reliance on incineration, because it has created a massive disinclination to recycle or avoid waste.
