REGARDING the letter from Jackie Smith in the SNJ about footpaths.
Yes, farmers who receive stewardship payments should keep footpaths clear and not to obstruct the passage of walkers.
This is also in their interest, as if paths are not clear of obstructions and stiles safe to use, then walkers are unlikely to wander off the correct path.
It is my understanding that if a path is obstructed, you have the right to find a way around this.
I must point out that the Ramblers (a national charity) do a tremendous amount of work keeping paths clear. This is carried out by volunteers who willing give of their time and also money.
There are groups from Ramblers all over the country.
My group, South Cotswold Ramblers.org.uk also have members who regularly meet to discuss obstruction and diversions.
We have over the past few years purchased and installed more thanover 20 kissing gates and stiles.
If you would like further information on our group and others, visit our website.
Why not join us for a walk, absolutely free for the first three walks?
