THERE is a group of often unseen, undervalued but indispensable workers in our district who deserve our gratitude.

I refer to our uncomplaining refuse collectors who are there in all weathers.

All credit also to our district council which, despite the national trend and pressure from interfering bureaucrats from the EU, still collect our rubbish weekly.

Our refuse men are not imbued with this pettiness so common in many counties throughout the UK refusing to empty bins that have the lid open or recently in Hull where bins were rejected by the bin men because they faced the wrong way claiming that they may injure themselves by turning them around, I kid you not.

Our men, thank heaven for me, do not rummage through our bins to check that recycling rules have been obeyed, or if I have left the lid open or failed to put the right plastic in the right bin and nor do they leave things behind as is a common complaint across the country because the material does not fit a recycling category, instead they do what we all expect of them and remove unwanted rubbish from our homes and prefer not to take on the role of policemen.

I asked the council to remove a defunct dishwasher to which they gave me a date for collection and rightly asked me to put it outside the gate.

I forgot all about it.

To my surprise and admiration they searched around until they found it beside our garage and carried it to their truck without complaint, I somehow can’t see that happening in Hull.

I am sure I speak for the majority of households by offering a big thank you for our bin men and the council refuge department for not regarding us as idiots and a nuisance as Hull council seem to do.
