WHENEVER I encounter visitors to Stroud I suggest that they start at the top of High Street, where there is a seat to rest awhile after the climb, and raise their eyes to look at the buildings as they walk down.
Our High Street buildings are an architectural delight from top to bottom.
However, on reaching Kendrick Street it becomes unsafe if one does not lower the gaze and study underfoot conditions, which are dangerous, and ugly.
Our High Street has never been truly pedestrianised, and the surface of bricks has been pummelled by traffic into unacceptable unevenness.
It is time for the council to reconsider this road surface.
The bricks are not suitable and ‘What’s wrong with Tarmacadam!’ It would fit in with the rest of its sister roads, be smooth and safe to walk on, and ‘shine in the rain’.
