ON Stroud District Council’s decision to house between five and 10 families from Syria.

Posted by Haloge: “It came after two petitions, bearing more than 1,200 signatures, were presented to SDC chairman Mark Rees and chief executive of SDC David Hagg before the meeting.”

As the district contains in excess of 115,000 people, could anyone kindly tell me what the other 113,800 people thought about this decision? Or may we surmise that the Green Party managed to drag out half of the people who voted for them at the general election, in order to force the opinions of a minority onto the majority, all in the best democratic tradition.

Posted by kjag23: Haloge I’m not sure you understand how petitions work - 1,200 signatures were presented in favour of taking in refugees. How many signatures were presented against? So regardless of the size of the population, there was still 1,200 people more for than against.

On the £2 million grant from the Homes and Communities Agency which paves the way for work to begin on the Brimscombe Port redevelopment.

Posted by B wildered: This redevelopment concerns me greatly. I really welcome housing there but only if they improve access (which seems unclear on the plan) and that a significant proportion is social housing and affordable housing - and when I say affordable, I mean affordable to the majority of people living with 10 miles of this development.

Leisure facilities would be good. Shops are not needed. There is a shop, pub and chip shop within a stone’s throw. Other than a cafe/restaurant to utilise the setting and serve the visitors, there is no need for further commercial development.

If allowed there would be no incentive to visit Stroud town centre and this would have a detrimental effect on the current businesses there. This would do far more harm to the town centre than building another supermarket.
