ON Green MEP Molly Scott Cato’s criticism of plans for the Hinkley Point nuclear power station.

Posted by Prismsuk: Anyone can do the simple sums to compare the cost per kWh of electricity generated by the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant and an offshore power plant such as Navitus Bay Wind Park. The simple figures for such calculations are there on both of the websites.

Even at a cost of £24.5bn, over its 60 year design life, electricity generated by Hinkley works out at £0.016/kWh. To get the same amount of electricity every year from wind parks, we would need 8.57 Navitus Bays and because they would only have a design life of 25 years, we would have to build them 2.4 times. At £3.5bn each, that equals £72bn of expenditure and equates to £0.047/kWh. The myth of high priced nuclear power and much lower priced wind power lives on. I bet Molly Scott Cato believes it in all sincerity. But the simple arithmetic facts turns this media-hyped assumption on its head.

Posted by Gurney: What Molly does not mention is that wind and solar power are unreliable and a backup provided by gas, coal or nuclear is essential for 24/7 supply. This must be factored into the cost of renewables.

Posted by corin22: Trouble with the greens is they are unable to (or don’t want to) grasp the fact that engineering is evolving all the time along with other technology.

Britain’s, regulations are the most stringent in the world. Far better nuclear, than windmills producing erratic energy when the wind blows, spoiling the environment, falling apart, with a life span of 15 years, not even enough time to replace the energy used making them.

On the visit by volunteers to the Jungle camp in Calais.

Posted by Salendine: A big thumbs up to the volunteers who are making a difference to some desperate people.
