CHRISTMAS can be a difficult time for people of all ages and circumstances, and I welcome any initiative to support those who need company and consideration throughout the whole year.
What I do take offence to is the use of the word ‘them’.
I am 60 years ‘old’ and I have not wished to participate in the Christmas consumer frenzy since I was a ‘young’ man.
I love the sense of midwinter and reading quietly by the fire, going for a walk, not... drinking myself stupid (I do enjoy a cider or three at the Woolpack), nor... stuffing myself until fit to burst.
I am not a Scrooge at all, and very happy to be alone and content at Christmas!
The use of the term ‘them’ suggests some poor race of human beings who lack integrity and awareness of who they are without choice or purpose to their lives, as if being a certain age invites terminology of pity.
I have already been called ‘dear’ at the post office!
Despite grey hair, slowing down and illnesses, my mind is fine thank you, and I am an aware individual of a stage of life, not ‘one of them'!
