ON Ecotricity’s plans for a £100 million sports and green technology centre near Eastington.

Posted by a-bomberg: “While the other half will comprise a green technology business park with sustainably built commercial offices and light industrial units potentially capable of creating up to 4,000 jobs.” Not true at all.

It is a site where up to 4000 people could work (like any industrial estate). Companies would be moving in to new units. Companies that already employ people. That is not job creation. That is just companies moving to a site closer to the M5.

No one in the immediate Stroud vicinity wants new housing estates built on the beautiful green surrounding fields and hills. Far better to build housing on a disused industrial site. (Developers take note.) Seems a wonderful integration of new housing and enhancement of the ongoing canal regeneration, with resulting benefits similar to those that Ebley has seen. I really cannot see that many of the Stroud merchants will be affected, but do think that must be studied and taken into consideration.

On the plans to redevelop Brimscombe Port into a multi-million pound space for housing, retail and recreation.

Some people will come for the day, and others will want to stay longer. There needs to be a quay for visitors to disembark easily and safely at Stroud, and both short and longer-term moorings at Brimscombe, with facilities that support them – water and power link-ups, shower and toilet facilities etc.

It is also essential to factor in the interface between residents and boat users, to avoid conflicts of interest.
