ON THE appeal for help to identify a boy who was hit by a car on the zebra crossing in Bath Road, Stonehouse.

Posted by Phyllus Jones: Zebra crossings were introduced in the 1930s when the number of road vehicles was much lower than today and vehicle speeds through towns were also lower. They depend upon drivers’ judgment as to whether a person approaching a zebra crossing entry is going to cross, and whether they can stop safely if the person should turn into the crossing.

I find many drivers simply ignore the zebra crossings unless the pedestrian has actually started crossing, and then need to slam on the brakes.

Zebra crossings are very dangerous and should be abolished and replaced by the push-button stoplight type.

I myself never cross at zebra crossings but walk about to one side or the other of that crossing and then cross only when traffic is not close in either direction.

That way, nobody ends up second-guessing the other. Much safer. Time to abolish all zebra crossings! Should have been done long ago.

Posted by taylorpen: Totally gutted! This beautiful field is all many of us in Concorde Sheltered housing complex can see! Due to us being at the bottom of the valley,we look up to this field and are avid watchers of the wildlife we see. Many of us have worlds which have shrunk to our own four walls and the view from the window. I cannot believe the decision has gone this way, I could cry.
