I WAS interested to read about Laurie Lee in your newspaper recently.

I was branch librarian at Boots Booklovers’ Library in Russell Street, Stroud, in 1959, the year that Cider With Rosie was published.

I ordered as many copies as l was allowed to meet the phenomenal demand for Laurie’s new book.

As soon as a copy was returned, we had half a dozen subscribers, who happened in be in the library at that time, almost fighting over it.

Laurie Lee often popped in to see how his book was going down with the locals.

He became a very familiar figure in the library.

Some of my subscribers, after reading one of our library copies, then bought their own.

I had an arrangement with Laurie that he would autograph them for my customers.

It worked well.
