AS NEWLY elected district councillors for Horsley and Nailsworth we listened to many different views on remaining in Europe when we campaigned for our seats.

While people had many different opinions the overwhelming response has been that while Europe is not perfect and, yes, there are problems, we do need to remain.

And all three of us agree strongly with them, for a number of reasons: We are stronger if we collaborate and work inside Europe to resolve issues and differences, to share our resources and knowledge.

Europe protects our national differences, farming, jobs, businesses, trade and public services – the social fabric of human rights and dignity.

On June 23, we shall be asked to vote.

As elected representatives of Nailsworth and Horsley we shall each be voting ‘yes’.

We do need to remain in the European Union for our futures, those of our children and grandchildren.

As a collection of small islands we cannot solve major problems alone and isolated.

Councillor Sue Reed (Labour) Councillor Norman Kay (Green) Councillor Steve Robinson (Labour) Work together to help young people APPARENTLY around 80 per cent of young people want the UK to remain in the EU.

Is this really just because they like the idea of easy travel between EU countries?

What is it that really separates ‘them’ from ‘us’?

I think the clue is in the ‘young’.

It’s the future, stupid!

Their interest is their future, a future where we work together:

• to build sustainable, supportive societies

• to hope for a life free from personal debt

• to provide care and support for our ageing communities

• to find solutions to the displacement of millions of refugees

• to address the problems of climate change

• to protect what natural environment remains

• to protect workers and all human rights

• to ensure regulations create markets that serve society and not just corporations

And to work towards peace and cooperation between all nations, looking forward to opportunities, not backwards with fear and hatred.
