THERE are two things that really surprise me about the reaction of people to the referendum.

Firstly the high percentage of people, who are prepared to risk jumping into unknown waters, despite being warned by 80 per cent of economists that there is a serious concern of a run down of our economy if we leave the EU.

The second point that hasn’t been raised is that the government is clinging to a neo-liberal economical model of inequality and austerity, the cuts are destroying our public services including the NHS.

People do notice that there are pot holes on every road and uncared housing estates through lack of funding which are indicative of poverty.

That their bus service has been cut and the children’s centre and libraries are partly run by volunteers and not now professionals.

We are the sixth richest country in the world and the obscenity is that we are quite prepared to spend £219 billion on a future Trident programme!

However, rather than having a go at the government on their deteriorating services, people put the blame on incoming immigrants (they are never called human beings).

Of course this is not new phenomena, it has been going on for centuries, culminating in the slaughter of six million Jews and gypsies around Europe 70 years ago.

Speaking as a Green party member, we are an internationalist party believing that only by working together can we solve the important issues facing this part of the planet.

We have a positive view of Europe, know only that by being inside the tent can we be effective, to create a fairer and less bureaucratic organisation.

There is no other option for a better Europe
