TODAY the sound of someone cutting hedges resounds over the Valley.
People just do not seem to realise it is illegal to cut trees and hedges between March and September because birds are nesting and wildlife is breeding.
Or maybe people just do not care.
I am at a loss to understand that professional gardeners and the public are oblivious to birds and the fact that they are nesting – often on a second and third brood.
The hedge in question in Bisley Road is part wild and I know it has birds nesting in there.
But when I spoke to the professional gardeners, they were not interested, and said birds “stop breeding in February”.
Ignorance is not bliss.
We should be protecting wildlife and not pushing it to the edges.
As suburbia spreads and population increases society must become aware of our precious wildlife or we may have a silent spring.
