IT IS not in fact illegal to cut hedges and trees between March and September as claimed by Lizzi Walton (Letters, June 15).
It is, however, an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to intentionally harm nesting birds or their nests.
The RSPB recommends avoiding hedge cutting between March and August but the RHS recommends cutting some varieties of hedge several times within this period.
Obviously their priorities differ but gardeners can be reassured that they are free to cut their hedges provided they take all reasonable precautions to avoid harm to nesting birds.
