DEAR Mr Carmichael, Some 300 years ago, Samuel Johnson, a committed Tory and possibly the greatest man-of-letters in English history, observed that a decent provision for the poor is the true test of any civilization.

Sir, make time to reflect on Dr Johnson’s insight before responding to the open letter that was addressed to you recently by Rachel Fletcher.

How vividly and courageously this young mother lays bare her difficulties, as well as the much-needed and appreciated support that she and many other families derive from The Five Ways Children Centre.

I echo Ms Fletcher’s heartfelt appeal – please keep the centre open and running.

Surely some ingenious men and women can dream up ways of doing so.
