I REFER to the letter by my old friend Clive Blackmore (SNJ, July 27) under the heading “Voters have the right to choose again”, ie the EU Referendum.

The answer to that is an unequivocal no.

Clive’s statement that: “The electorate are/were wrong” ie “Democracy is exercised when voting occurs every so often” is not the case herein.

We were told that: “Whatever the result there would be no going back”! Quite correct too.

It has been reiterated that Brexit stands.

Democracy – ancient Greek, Dēmokratia = Demos the common people.

In our terminology ‘the electorate’.

Democracy is where the people decide as opposed to totalitarianism, eg North Korea and China.

If Clive and others do not like the result, too bad.

We would be having referendums none stop.

This is the non-democratic major aspect that is wrong with the EU and its hierarchy, the ‘commissars’.

The Jean Claude Junk(ers) and that ilk and in my view are the reasons that the majority of people voted as they did.

‘Democracy’ requires a condition of respect for individuals within ‘the community’.

Sadly lacking within the EU set up.

Of course I am respectfully aware that Clive has friends in Germany – but – before anyone fires verbal cannon balls at me I would point out that although I am English my grandparents were Scottish and Irish.

My wife is/was Irish, my eldest son’s wife is Lithuanian they live in ROI therefore our grandchildren are Irish!

(How’s that for a mini EU?) No, I am not a Little Englander I am a ‘Great Britannia’n’.

Two Short Scenario’s:- 1.

(a) If the Strident Sturgeon gets her way for Scottish Independence and wants to throw away Scotland’s part of the UK – (since 1603, 1706, 1707), - after well over 300 years to become a very minor part of the EU State, preferring Europe to a United Kingdom, then she and they will live to regret it.

Hadrian’s Wall will need to be re manned and the border tightly controlled.

(b) As the North Sea oil runs dry, (apparently that’s not long into the future), Westminster stops the “funding” and they convert to the infamous Euro Currency and with sites like Faslane etc closed and transferred to RN Portsmouth economic problems will arise in Scotland.

(c) All my Scottish friends resident in England will require European style Scottish passports and might even have to seek asylum in Scotland.

2.

(a) If Northern Ireland similarly remains in the EU then it will become a United Ireland – ROI making last century’s barbaric atrocities more worthless.

(b) The even longer centuries of the rights of passage and free movement for UK and ROI citizens will also have to cease.

(c) Northern Ireland would, as then, part of the ROI, would have to go over to the Euro currency in compliance.

(d) The well practised business by many citizens of the ROI operating advantageous financial arrangements with and through UK Banks in Northern Ireland and many other operative arrangements, would cease!

The advantages would be lost!

Finally as a related aside, a young member of my in-laws in ROI recently purchased a derelict farm site and set about arranging to redevelop it repairing all the derelict buildings bringing them up to standard.

Smash – due to some hidden obscure EU rule, planning permission was refused unless everything was demolished and rebuilt from scratch.

The EU could have been a superb idea, experiment – but ruined by human frailties.

EU bah humbug!
