ON the rally calling for drivers to slow down on the common after two cows were killed in four days.

Posted by Shenice Knight: I understand the agenda behind this rally and can agree for it to go ahead to warn people within the local area... but what about those commuters who don’t have an abode in the local area... I can’t see this making any difference.

Posted by DanBob: Good luck to you Pat. Unfortunately it will take more than a protest to stop this unsolvable problem. The National Trust won’t accept anything that urbanises the Commons so no lights. Without lights there can’t be any traffic calming such as speed bumps or build outs. Yet the NT need the cattle there to preserve the habitat. It’s a no-win situation. Perhaps we need to ban all non-essential traffic from the Common but then less traffic often equates to higher speeds.

Posted by joesoapsbrother: The Variable Message Sign referred to was a joke. It broke down after day one and disappeared within a week.

Posted by Crow: There was an item on Points West the other day about cows wearing a collar that gives them an electric shock when they go near a buried cable, providing an invisible fence. This could be done on the common.

Posted by Judith Forrester: For God’s sake slow down. You know they are on the common every year. I hope they put speed ramps all along the common roads.

Posted by Liz Phipps: They don’t need speed humps - they need instant speed cameras, with instant fines. Word will soon get out and people will slow down. Most drivers fly over speed humps like a race track and the ones that don’t are the sensible drivers that would be aware of the cattle.

Posted by Emma Mains: I totally agree but not all drivers are speeding. I drive along the common between 4.15am and 4.45am and it is now dark and foggy/misty it’s so hard to see anything in front of you driving at 15-20 mph. Street lighting might help.

Posted by kjag23: How lovely. I’m glad there are people not only in this world but in our town who care enough about others to put on an event like this. Good to see businesses getting behind it too. We should be grateful we have people kind enough to spend their time helping others.
