I AM a great supporter of recycling as much waste as we can.
However, I would like to use your column to comment on certain aspects of the new recycling system that I believe have not been thought through adequately; will add an additional cost on to the householder; and have not been clearly explained to the householder community.
A leaflet sent out to households shows diagrams of the Food Waste Caddy and Bin with inserted bags.
In the leaflet the only comment about this is under ‘Recycling Tips’, where it is suggested that you keep both containers clean by lining them. The containers are different sizes, most plastic bags from stores have holes in them to avoid children suffocating, so, in the interests of avoiding the smells and mess of food waste we, as clients, will need to buy two different sizes of plastic bag.
Other councils that I know who operate this system provide rolls of degradable plastic bags that you put into your caddy and then, when full, tie and put in the Food Waste Bin.
Why is our council not providing us with such bags?
We, as clients, are left to buy them at our own expense!
