THANK you for your coverage of the transfer of three important landmarks from Stroud District Council to Stroud Town Council on October 19.
The headline stated: ‘Council agrees £130k to buy historic landmarks’. This is incorrect.
Stroud District Council agreed to provide the town council with a £130,000 funding package with the transfer of these properties.
The town council has limited resources and the three properties – Bisley Road Cemetery, Sims Clock and Bank Gardens - will need ongoing maintenance, and in some cases major investment to safeguard them for future generations.
The funding package provided by the district council will enable the Town Council to protect these much valued landmarks.
It is important for your readers to understand that the town council did not “buy” the properties. The town council is committed to acting as a custodian for their properties and to ensure they remain in public ownership.
The result is that these historic landmarks have returned to the rightful ownership of Stroud residents.
