On the Aldi and Merrywalks plans Posted by Ian Peters: The location proposed for the Aldi is not right at all, and I’d much rather see time and money being invested in the town itself.

I’m not against Aldi or any other supermarket coming to the Stroud area, but the proposed locations are just not right? There are plenty of sites around Ebley/Ryeford that have not been explored.

Posted by TigerTigerBurningBright: And there’s a supermarket already approved only a few hundred yards away. That’s what should be developed.

Posted by MoreSilentMajority: Merrywalks is so convenient for shoppers. Lots of free parking. Lots of easy road access for a care free day at the shops. NOT. Anyone trying to get there by private vehicle and park has a devil of a time. Actually driving to any shop in the town centre is a nightmare. But the council makes a fortune on parking charges and overtime/illegal parking fines, so is reluctant to allow anyone to set up a competitive supermarket area with free parking. If I need to go to the Merrywalks area, I use the bus. much saner. It does restrict my shopping though. If I do my weekly shop, I do NOT go anywhere near the town centre.

Posted by tomlongpost: I agree. It’s a total shocking piece of design. Ugly, hard to find, hard to use, confusing layout, dark and claustrophobic - and that is just the car park. Ten million should cover the demolition and some tree planting. The few remaining businesses can fill the empty shops in town, Brunel Mall and the wasteland around Ciao Italia and McDonald’s. A Lidl or Aldi can go there too and the other at Redlers. Petsathome can go in with Sainsbury’s. The Eco Park can be scrapped and so can the incinerator because they don’t make sense to us.

On Jenny Bailey’s call to clean up Stroud.

Posted by Mad in Stroud: Jenny you are right! It’s something about the current generation of teenagers - if you look in Park Gardens and Stratford Park, they all throw their bottles, sandwich cartons and other detritus where they have been in the full expectation that somebody else will pick it up.

This, despite the fact that there are litter bins near all exits.

In my younger days, you were a ‘litter lout’ if you did that, and could be prosecuted as such.

These teenagers need to respect the environment that has been preserved and protected for them AND OTHERS !
