IT was good to read in the SNJ about the forthcoming Centenary event at the Woodchester Wayside Cross on Saturday, June 10.

Our group, the Five Valleys Great War Researchers, has been very busy over the last four years helping people ‘connect’ with their family members who may have fought and died in the First World War.

The Wayside Cross is particularly special, as it has the names of men from all over the Stroud district – and some from much further afield – commemorated on it.

There is some information about them in Philip Goodwin’s excellent recent book, The Story of the Woodchester Wayside Cross, but we have much more detailed family information for most of these men if any of your readers want to find out more.

Some of the men will have left children, and most will have left nephews and nieces and cousins, so their descendants may well be living in this area today.

It would be nice to identify as many descendants and relatives as we can and they can be invited to the service on June 10.

Time is short, so interested readers are welcome to phone me on 01453 834485 or email me on ww1research@mailcan.co.uk
