I WOULD like to respond to ME Solomon by way of Huw Niland (both in Letters, 21/6/17).

Niland talks about the rubbish left by travellers costing the taxpayer £500 to clear up and understandably describes this as theft.

This is a tiny drop in the ocean of the staggering £4.7 million extra per year the taxpayer will be paying to build and use the Javelin Park incinerator as compared with stopping landfill and simply using available capacity in other regional incinerators.

And that waste of taxpayers’ money doubles when you compare the Javelin Park deal to less polluting, more recycling-focused solutions which are much, much cheaper.

(Incineration is not the only alternative to landfill, nor is it the best alternative, and it is certainly not the cheapest.) That is what justifies all the talk.

That is the theft that needs robustly dealing with.
