EVER since the results of the European referendum I have been struggling to understand the mindset of voters who voted for out.

Now, some voted for out – stirred by Farage – as they were lied to that £350 million would be given weekly to the NHS instead of the European Parliament.

Creating hate towards immigrants and exaggerating the number of refugees in this country, things which in reality were caused mainly by the wars that Blair and Bush deliberated created.

After the triggering of Article 50 by the Tories, helped along by Corbyn’s three line whip (thus marginalising the Labour Remain MPs), the negotiations are now being led by the worst people we could have mustered: Boris Johnson and David Davis.

They have even voted against what was initially assured, that “there will continue to be free trade, and access to the single market”.

To win us fully over, the Leavers got out their lie machines by saying that 51.9 per cent of the population have voted leave (while this is only the percentage amongst those who actually voted), then they increase this figure up to 80 per cent, calculated on the assumption that those who voted for either Labour or Conservatives at the General Election all agreed with leaving.

Many of the people I now speak to, say it won’t ever happen, thinking that eventually common sense will prevail and we will stay in Europe.

About a month ago, the Observer had an opinion poll on the referendum and 60 per cent said they wish to stay.

In your letters pages recently, there was correspondence from a colleague of mine on SDC, George Butcher (Lib Dem), appealing to David Drew to support an amendment from the Lib Dems, to help keep us in the European Single market – reminding him that Stroud was a remain constituency.

Needless to say that, as David is now on the front bench he adheres to the party whips!

At the recent Seed Festival at Hawkwood College, Green MEP Molly Scott Cato spoke on the effect of Brexit and the single Market on the regional predominantly rural economy.

By chance David Drew, who was also there but didn’t attend the talk, didn’t hear Molly’s observations, otherwise I am sure he would think again.

Her talk centred on food and the environment (as this has been her mandate by the European Government).

What she pointed out was that we only produce 23 per cent of our food now.

That the single market has developed over the last 20 years, is rather stable and works fairly.

That although Europe has started suffering from climate change, there isn’t a shortage of food yet.

Secondly, what she was more concerned about would be the lack of transit labour into the South West to help with our crop gathering.

It makes me think of a man I know, who has a vineyard near Stroud and who sells his wine in the Shambles, who relies on a group of people from Eastern Europe to pick his grapes every year.

They are very good workers and there is no gang master.

Finally, what worried Molly the most was the question, where are we going to find new Markets quickly?

Far away in the USA-Mr Trump, China or Saud Arabia?

She thinks it will be utter disaster.

Both Labour and the Tories are taking us into an abyss for ideological reasons, I have yet to meet anyone who believes that Brexit will improve our country, quite the opposite.

We have people power, we can and need to use it to change this crazy destiny.
