ON the news that Tesco has formally objected to the proposed Aldi store in Stroud.

Posted by mmaxab: Tesco objected because of impact on town centre...what a load of cobblers, they objected because because they will be the losers not the town centre, does anyone remember the furore over Tesco’s plans when they moved in? What a bunch of hypocrites, surely not the same company that banks land just to keep other potential rivals from building... heard it all now.

Posted by Frankiefromwales: Totally agree all Tesco are bothered about is profit. They couldn’t give a monkeys about Stroud town centre or employment on the bath road site Posted by clams: I am more stunned by the fact that Tesco can object on the grounds it has with a straight face.

Posted by Pisces123: Well what a surprise! Just why have they taken this long to object? Given that they presumably had an impact on the town centre when they opened their site, it does seem totally hypocritical that they should now be objecting to a very serious rival. Pot and kettle spring to mind!

Posted by lesorchard91: Tesco are only thinking of themselves and the prospect of losing trade to Aldi and Lidl.

Posted by stroudrobbo: Just as we expected now it has gone above SDC heads! All of a sudden Tesco are concerned for Stroud town centre Nailsworth and Stonehouse!!

Posted by Kevin Roberts: Competition and choice is great for consumers, so it’s hardly surprising that existing supermarkets in the area would complain. We had used Waitrose in Stroud regularly where the ‘free’ coffee with their loyalty card is a nice touch. Clearly the Waitrose shopping experience a bit better vs other supermarkets but at the expense of paying more for purchases. Personally I think the Co-op on Slad Road in Stroud is just the best locally for value and for customer service. We tried out the new Lidl (Coney Hill) in Gloucester for the first time last weekend for our weekly shop were really impressed with it on all levels - not least with our cash savings but it was also a state of the art store that was every bit as good as Waitrose Stroud ( and parking significantly better). That store has even copied the Waitrose grey/green colour scheme to ‘mimic’ the Waitrose experience. Ok they sell some different brands but some brands are the same - for example branded butter was 15 per cent cheaper and smoked salmon packs 30-50 per cent cheaper.
