JUDITH Large raises some important issues for David Drew in her letter of July 26 (“Questions for our new MP”, SNJ letters, July 26).
No doubt David will reply in full when summer holidays allow; but a few points can be made now.
Regarding the Forest Green Rovers Eco Park project, David clearly can’t undo his previous, publicly stated support for the project.
But he has made it perfectly clear that in his new status as MP and shadow minister, he won’t now be involved in the project; and anyone who knows the man will also know that David Drew would never use his political status unduly to influence a key decision of this kind in an inappropriate way.
David has also made clear publicly that he was a Remainer in the EU referendum and he will be the first to recognise the importance of a humane and non-discriminatory approach to Stroud’s many non-British EU citizens.
Because they are in opposition, Labour cannot directly influence the government’s Brexit policy; but Judith can be assured that both David and the Labour Opposition will do everything possible to allay the understandable concerns and uncertainty that these greatly valued members of Stroud’s richly diverse community are enduring at this difficult time.
